Does makeup Ruin the face? This question arises in everyone’s mind. Why do we apply makeup, why should makeup be applied, everyone asks us these questions. If you are like me, a makeup content creator or influencer, you must have heard these questions too, in comments, emails, or messages on your social media. Whether they are children or adults, boys or girls, everyone is crazy about makeup these days. Everyone uses makeup everywhere, on television, OTT platforms, news; there are many benefits to it as well as disadvantages. Some people benefit greatly from it, while others suffer losses. But not everyone can use makeup. After all, no matter how good it is, it is still chemical processed cosmetics, so it should not be used on young children. Cosmetics like oil, cream, sunscreen are available for children nowadays, but there is still no makeup product that is child-safe except for kajal.
What You will find here?
So here in this post, we will learn why makeup is necessary? What are the benefits, what are the disadvantages, how should it be used, at what age should it not be applied, etc. Does makeup ruin the face? Why and how should makeup be applied, and at what age should it be applied?

What is Makeup ?
- Makeup is a kind of temporary mask that covers the external flaws of your face for a while, and that too very beautifully. By the way, if you are reading the image above, it is my own post on Instagram (@mayaaru_makeup) 😊
- Makeup is a kind of color that matches your face and easily covers the spots, blemishes, dark spots on your face.
- Makeup is an art that shapes the face, eyes, and lips, and enhances their appearance.
- Makeup is a kind of painting that fills different colors on the eyes, lips, and cheeks, making the face look cleaner and more beautiful than before.
- Makeup is a confidence provider agent that automatically boosts your confidence, enhances your personality, and changes your appearance.
- Foundation and powder applied to the face are not just makeup, but also kajal applied to the eyes, lip balm or lipstick applied to the lips, everything that brings a slight change to your natural complexion is called makeup.
Do Remember
“However, all these things are only for a few hours; makeup is never permanent. Although these days, the option of permanent makeup has also emerged, but we won’t discuss that. Let’s talk about the normal makeup that we see around us.”
Why should makeup be applied?
“It’s 100% true that everyone competes with each other everywhere, even if it’s just a little, compliments come to mind when seeing others, and we start looking for compliments or praise for ourselves, whether it’s at work, in clothes, in behavior, or on the face. We can bring these compliments to our face through makeup.
Nowadays, makeup has become so ingrained that even if someone has clear, blemish-free, natural skin, people comment that they must have applied makeup.
Whether it’s for the office or college, guests coming home, or going somewhere, we always want to look good and better, which isn’t achieved just with good clothes; applying powder and lip balm is also makeup.
Even if you’ve never worn makeup since childhood, you’ll definitely apply it for your wedding, and then we should keep pace with the times and embrace the changes to come. Makeup is today’s reality that we should adopt.
Avoid Misunderstanding
It’s not necessary that only those who have flaws or spots on their faces use makeup. Even those with clear, clean, and glowing faces also use makeup. We’ll learn the benefits of makeup later. When you apply makeup on your face, your complexion improves, and seeing yourself in the mirror gives you a lot of confidence. After all, who doesn’t want a radiant, flawless, and beautiful face? Even if it’s just for a few hours, makeup can give you the change you desire in your face.”
At what age should makeup be applied?
If you are 12-13 years old, you can start wearing makeup, but only in a light manner, as we see on YouTube or online social media. However, you should start applying makeup more extensively only after the age of 17 to 18.
Why?
Children’s skin and their bodies are progressive and in developmental stages. Our skin is the largest organ of our body, with the most sensitive part being our face. Therefore, makeup should never be used on children. The marks of reactions occurring on children’s bodies or faces can last for a long time, and makeup contains many chemicals and ingredients that are not suitable for delicate skin, which can cause harm.
Additionally
even if you are much older, with many wrinkles already appearing, makeup should still be used sparingly. Because at that age, the skin is already very dry, natural sebum and oil dry up, and using makeup exacerbates dryness. Makeup only conceals spots and blemishes, it cannot hide wrinkles.
How should makeup be applied?
Makeup should always be applied with essential tools. While there are millions of videos available on social media for makeup application, I’ll share what my personal belief is. Apply makeup only as much as necessary; never try to change the natural color (skin tone) of your face. If your complexion is very fair, avoid trying to make it medium. Blush, contour, highlighter, and eye makeup add a subtle hue to the face, providing it with a natural shape and radiance, so that the face doesn’t look plain or flat.
Benefits of Makeup
The first and most amazing benefit is that it hides all the spots and blemishes on your face, making the face look clear and radiant. Dark circles are also concealed, as well as pimples. Makeup transforms the face and gives it a better appearance. Nowadays, many natural and updated makeup products are available that give the face a completely natural look, as if it’s our original skin. With makeup, desired shapes can be given to small or thin eyebrows. Makeup can also shape thin or overly thick lips as needed, giving them a perfect roundness.
Stranger Part is –
Makeup is an art that can transform a face like someone else’s. We see in dramas or theaters, people in different disguises (such as a saint’s disguise, a girl’s disguise, the face of a famous artist), all of which are made possible by makeup. With makeup, a young person can be made to look old, and an elderly person can be given the appearance of a child.
“Makeup has many benefits, but all these benefits are temporary because makeup is not permanent, so its benefits are also not permanent. As long as makeup is applied, the benefits will remain.”
What are the disadvantages?
Person to Person
Such as turning someone fair without reason. It might be acceptable for a special drama, but it’s wrong to do it personally. However, this happens in many places.
Often you might have seen in weddings, the bride’s face is changed to a great extent. Makeup does bring changes to the face, but it should be natural, not entirely fake. If a girl has a dusky complexion, then her face color is changed completely while becoming a bride. Whereas, we should aim for a natural shade for our presentation.
Effects on skin & Health
Makeup is entirely made of chemicals. Natural makeup means it does not contain harmful chemicals, but if the ingredients in makeup don’t suit your skin, it can lead to reactions, causing acne, blemishes on the face. If the quality of lipstick is not good, then during eating, it can go inside the mouth and cause sores or stomach infections.
My Experienced Disadvantages
The most significant damage I have often felt is that makeup stains clothes while cleaning. Sometimes it becomes nearly impossible to remove makeup stains from clothes as the fabric absorbs the makeup ingredients, rendering any remedy ineffective.
Whether removing makeup with oil, micellar water, or cleansing balm, especially while removing neck makeup, it often transfers onto clothes. If there is excessive sweating on the face, the makeup starts to run with the sweat, or parts of the face lose their makeup, making the face appear uneven.
Does makeup ruin the face?
The face can be damaged both ways –
by applying makeup incorrectly or by not properly removing it.
- If the ingredients of makeup don’t suit your skin, it can harm your face. If makeup is not properly removed from the face, it can cause damage.
- Sleeping with makeup on can lead to a breakout of pimples and acne overnight because the skin’s natural sebum comes out at night and can react with makeup, causing harm to the face.
- If eye makeup is not removed properly or accidentally goes inside the eyes while removing, it should be removed immediately, as it can affect vision.
- Even a slight residue of lipstick should not be left on the lips; it should be thoroughly cleaned; otherwise, the lips can darken quickly. Lipstick stays on for a few hours only, but if left overnight, it can excessively dry the lips, leading to cracking.
The face won’t be damaged by makeup if…
- The face won’t be damaged by makeup if it is thoroughly cleaned before sleeping, using a face wash or cleanser, followed by toner, serum, moisturizer, etc.
- If the face is very dry, facial oil can be used after removing makeup, which will provide overnight treatment to the skin.
- Preparing the face properly before applying makeup prevents excess makeup from settling into the pores.
- It’s essential to apply toner, serum, eye cream, a good moisturizer, and then a makeup primer to prepare the face.
- If primer is not applied before makeup, makeup can settle into pores, leading to breakouts.
- Primer minimizes open pores, ensuring that makeup stays on the surface and doesn’t penetrate the skin.
- Applying under-eye cream after thoroughly cleaning eye makeup prevents dark circles from worsening.
- If makeup suits your skin type (oily, combination, dry, normal), it won’t cause any harm.
Keep In mind
- Every makeup product should match your skin type, such as oil-control or matte makeup for oily skin.
- If any eye makeup accidentally gets inside the eyes while applying, it should be immediately cleaned; otherwise, it may cause infection. Except for kohl or kajal, no eye product should enter the eyes.
- If makeup remover is not available, coconut oil can be used to remove makeup, which is the best option, as it effectively removes all types of makeup.
- After removing makeup with makeup remover or oil, wash the face twice with a face wash. The first wash will remove oil or remover, and the second wash will remove any remaining makeup or dirt.
- After washing the face, wipe it with toner using cotton to ensure that any leftover makeup is completely removed.
- After cleaning the face, don’t forget to apply moisturizer, whether your face is oily, as otherwise, the skin cells may dry out overnight.
- Never use expired makeup products.
- The shelf life of every product is usually between 2 to 5 years, but after opening the product, it should be used within 6 to 15 or 18 months, as indicated in the instructions on the product packaging. Therefore, it’s essential to read the instructions before using the product.
- When purchasing base makeup products, pay attention to your skin tone and shade.
- Avoid overdoing makeup at all times; always opt for balanced makeup. For example, if the eye makeup is dark, apply a lighter shade of lipstick. If you’re using dark lipstick, keep the eye makeup simple and light, and keep the blush, contour, and highlighter natural and light as well.
- Avoid using too vibrant shades during the day.
Whether to opt for affordable or expensive makeup
Whether to opt for affordable or expensive makeup depends on various factors, including personal preference, skin type, budget, and specific needs. Here are some considerations:
- Quality: Sometimes expensive makeup brands offer higher quality products with better ingredients and formulations. However, some affordable brands also provide excellent quality products.
- Skin Sensitivity: If you have sensitive skin, investing in slightly more expensive makeup with hypoallergenic or dermatologist-tested formulas might be beneficial to avoid skin irritations.
- Usage Frequency: If you use makeup frequently and go through products quickly, it might be more cost-effective to choose affordable options. However, for special occasions or specific needs, investing in higher-end products might be worth it.
- Specific Needs: Certain makeup products, such as foundation or skincare-infused makeup, might require higher investment for better results, especially if you have specific skin concerns or preferences.
Ultimately, the best approach is to balance quality, affordability, and personal preferences when choosing makeup products. It’s essential to research product reviews, ingredients, and performance to make informed decisions based on your individual needs and budget.
1 Look for all Occasions
If you watch social media, YouTube, Reels, and similar platforms, you must have seen the no makeup makeup look, soft neutral natural makeup look, or clean makeup look trending. In all of these, light shades of products are used, and the entire makeup look appears fantastic. Such makeup looks can be created for any occasion like parties, office, college, etc. These makeup looks are also referred to as all-purpose makeup looks.
If you watch television serials or movies, the makeup done for daily looks is similar to the no makeup look, which looks quite attractive and natural.
Conclusion
Makeup boosts confidence and can temporarily cover flaws on the face for a few hours. However, if makeup is not used correctly, it can harm the skin and make the face look worse. In everyday life, good makeup is one that enhances your face rather than changing it. While some artists use makeup to transform faces for certain characters, here we are talking about everyday needs.
